Case Studies

Client: Petroleum Refinery

Location: Southern California

Project Summary

GEM MTS rapidly mobilized to provide liquid scrubbing systems to control the exhaust from a half dozen vacuum trucks removing light-end hydrocarbons during a major refinery shutdown. Previously, the refinery was changing their carbon vessels several times per day , resulting in frequent work stoppages, which accumulated to a lot of standby and downtime costs for the refinery. The high usage rate of carbon also added to mounting turnaround expenses. Furthermore, due to the nature of the volatile vapors, some of the carbon vessels were overheating, presenting a risk of combustion.

GEM MTS's scrubbers substantially extended the average carbon change-out at a reduced cost over previous vapor control methods . The refinery was “pleased with the scrubber systems [because] there were less stoppages or downtime [versus carbon alone], and the safety factor was excellent.” They will definitely utilize GEM during the next maintenance event where vac truck exhaust is a concern.

Vapor Source(s): Gasoline

Equipment Used: Liquid Scrubbers

Cost Benefits: Cut carbon expenditures by more than 300%, reduced stoppage rates for carbon change-outs by at least fivefold!

Safety Benefits: Eliminated inhalation hazard of toxic vapors in a crowded area of the refinery and diminished the risk of combustion.

Compliance: Reduced the potential for an odor nuisance NOV
